Home Wireless

Submitted by jasonslater on Monday, 2 April 2007No Comment

It’s not often I write about things about home on this Journal but it often surprises me how many people leave things at the default settings. I run Netstumbler from time to time on my home wireless network and it often picks up a number of devices around my locale and many of them are clearly on the default settings, all on the same channel, and probably all wondering why they aren’t getting great Internet performance.

I guess it’s understandable that the average person might not know that they could and maybe should change some of these settings but maybe the settings should be more accessible, or even better, auto setting so things like channel can detect any devices using the current channel and switch to another.

For passwords, the first time you use the device why can’t it at least prompt the user to enter a new password. Don’t even get me started on locking wireless down by MAC address.
