Why I Unfollowed Thousands Of People On Twitter

twitter 1 Why I Unfollowed Thousands Of People On TwitterI have a confession to make – I recently unfollowed a large number of people on Twitter. If I unfollowed you recently I am sorry, it really is nothing personal, or any reflection upon you as an individual or company. In this article I’ll be talking about the the strange phenomenon of following people on Twitter and why I decided to become an un-follower.

  1. I try to keep on top of my follower count to see who exactly is spam. I try to be as courteous as possible and follow back, but some people have ‘spam’ written across their forehead.

Keep up the good work Jason, and thanks for becoming one of my followers!

  2. Nice article Jason, and I agree with what Andy said about using Tweetdeck lists.

I wrote a blog post about the phenomenon of un-following people on Twitter recently entitled “You Un-Followed Me! Don’t You Love Me Anymore?” (http://bit.ly/kKt3I1)

  3. A nice roundup of ideas on the follow-back culture on twitter Jason. I have even seen some ‘follow back’ clubs on Twitter. It’s seems that some people see numbers as were more important than relationships.

What annoys me most is when someone follows me and when I eventually get around to checking them out they have already un-followed. I have more important things to do than check my new followers every day so I batch process them every 3-5 days.

I use Tweet Deck to manage followers by putting people I converse with regularly into a ‘top twitters’ list and making that my first column. I also have other lists for subject matter experts which I assign to columns. That means I can focus on the signal rather than be confused by the noise!

  4. Good points Jason, I do not automatically follow my followers because I try to keep the numbers I am following to a manageable amount. After all, there’s no point following people if what they say is going to get lost in the crowd is there? The numbers are creeping up though and I am thinking maybe I should do the same but I don’t want to offend anyone :-)
