Sony Vaio M Series Netbook – True or False?

I am on the look out for a good netbook at the moment and I’m also mid-way through a feature look at what’s on offer in the netbook arena for 2010. Key features are going to be weight, battery life, approx 10” screen, wireless and Bluetooth connectivity, operating system choice and of course price.

However, the internet news is buzzing at the moment with the news that Sony are looking to release the Vaio M series at the end of March 2010. Sony don’t appear to making any fanfare about the news just yet but the netbook appears to be trickling into online stores, particularly Tesco who have it described as “Sony VPC-M11M1E/B Netbook – Black (Intel Atom™ N450, 1GB, 250GB, 10.1" Screen, Windows 7 Starter)” and retailing for £299.

However, before we get all excited, the feature description on the Tesco site currently states the screen is a 15.6” (39.6cm) display – so something might be in error!

However, assuming it’s not an error, in terms of specification and our checklist:

  • 10.1-inch screen display (1024×600) – CHECK
  • Windows 7 Starter – CHECK
  • Weight: 1.3 Kg – CHECK
  • Connectivity: 10 / 100 MHz Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n – CHECK
  • Bluetooth – CHECK
  • Price of £299 – CHECK

The only piece of information missing so far is battery life, but in terms of other specifications the machine also features an Intel Atom N450 processor with a processing speed of 1.66GHz, a 250GB hard drive, integrated graphics and webcam, and 1GB of DDR 2 memory.
