If you have them configured in Microsoft Outlook, PST (Personal Storage Table) files are where most of your Outlook activities are stored, including electronic mail, attachments, calendar items, contacts, tasks and notes.  Dealing with oversize PST files can be troublesome but the task can be made much easier with the help of a simple add-in.

With electronic mail attachments in particular, these PST files can quickly fill up. However, they can be managed better by storing attachments outside of the PST – perhaps on a local drive folder. Attachments can be dealt with manually but if you get as may emails as I do on a regular basis you’ve probably thought there must be a quicker and more efficient way of handling this task.

To strip attachments from electronic mail in Outlook obtain the “Outlook Attachment Remover Add-in”, from software developer KOPF, which is available as a freeware add-in for Outlook and it currently up to version 2.1. Supported operating systems are Windows 32-bit including Windows NT, 2000, and Windows XP. Versions of Outlook supported are Outlook 2000, 2003 and 2007.

Once installed (you will need to close Outlook prior to installation), Outlook Attachment Remove Add-in, sits on the toolbar and can quickly strip attachments – saving them in a disk based folder to help keep your PST folder small. The context menu is extended too, right-click on an email and you can strip those attachments right away.
