The Smartphone has been growing fast, but in the last year or two it seems to be levelling out a little. Accelerometers, Digital Compasses, Assisted GPS, Bluetooth, Camera, Wi-Fi and Touch Screens are all familiar terms these days and on the software front Application Stores, Social Media, and Gaming are usual terms.
With so many devices available – what are the ones to look out for?
Nokia N97 Mini
The Nokia N97 Mini is the smaller version of the Symbian OS Nokia N97.
A side sliding phone with tilting screen it features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Compass, GSP and Assisted GPS. The weight is 138g and it is only 14.2mm deep. Exchange Integration is provided through Mail For Exchange. The onboard camera is a 5 megapixel camera with a secondary VGA camera for video calls. Storage is 8 GB (expandable to 24GB with microSD). The screen is 3.2” resistive screen, 16.7 million colours, with a resolution of 640×360. Applications can be downloaded through the Nokia Ovi application store. The N97 is currently available in the UK from Vodafone and Nokia.

Nokia N900
Another entry from Nokia is the Maemo operating system based N900.
Larger than the N97 and N97 mini, and heavier (weight is 181g), the N900 features a 3.5” touch display with a resolution of 800×480 and supports 3D graphics acceleration. As well as the touch screen, which can be used with a style, the N900 features a side-slide keyboard and a kick stand for watching movies in landscape mode (TV out is also supported). Assisted GPS is supported by the new Ovi Maps application, and Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi are also provided. Internal application memory is up to 1GB and storage is expandable up to 32 GB with microSD. The Nokia N900 is currently available in the UK from Vodafone and Nokia.

Sony Ericsson Satio

The killer feature of the Sony Ericsson Satio is undoubtedly the 12 megapixel camera with Xenon flash.
The touch screen is 3.5” 16:9 ration with 360×640 pixels and 16 million colours. Internal memory is 128MB with an 8GB storage microSD card included. Weight of the phone is a reasonable 126g. Bluetooth, Assisted GPS is supported by Wisepilot and the ever useful Google Maps, TV out, Wi-Fi are all available with this phone. The Satio is Symbian based and features hand writing recognition technology, Java and video streaming. The Sony Ericsson Satio is currently available in the UK on the Orange network.

Palm Pre
The Palm Pre is the long awaited return to form from Palm.
The Pre has some nifty features including linked contacts, universal search, and combined messaging. Currently available in the UK from O2 it is a sliding keyboard smart phone, with a 3 megapixel camera, a 320×480 24-bit colour screen, and 8GB storage. The operating system is webOS. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Assisted GPS are included. The phone can be extended using the Palm Application store – though only a few applications are currently available in the UK.

Apple iPhone 3GS

Does the Apple iPhone really need an introduction?
Simply regarded as one of the best smartphones available, the Apple iPhone comes in 16GB or 32GB storage flavours and can be purchased in Black of White. The camera is 3 megapixel and the screen is a 3.5” multi-touch 320×480 resolution with onscreen keyboard. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Digital Compass and Assisted GPS are included. The iPhone 3GS is currently available in the UK from O2, Orange, Vodafone and the Apple Store. Applications and Widgets can be download from the iPhone App store.

BlackBerry Storm2
The BlackBerry Storm2 uses an onscreen keyboard, which uses SureType and Multi-tap when in portrait mode and a more traditional QWERTY layout in landscape mode. If you want the experience of a “proper” keyboard you should probably consider the BlackBerry Bold 9700. The screen on the Storm2 is a 3.25” display with360x480 pixels and 65k colours, a 3.2 megapixel camera is also included on the device. Onboard flash memory is 256MB and 2GB storage is included on the device, expandable using a microSD card. Wi-Fi also makes an appearance on the Storm2 together with GPS and Bluetooth and the weight of the phone is just 160g. The BlackBerry Storm2 is currently available in the UK from Vodafone.

HTC Touch Pro 2
The HTC Touch Pro 2 runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional but has been tweaked to use TouchFlo 3D, much to its credit – but you can also slide out the 5 row QWERTY keyboard when you want something a little more physical to type on. The adjustable tilt screen is a 3.6” display with a stonking 480×800 resolution, and the camera is a 3.2 megapixel unit with a secondary VGA camera for video calls. Memory is served up by 512MB ROM, and 288 MB RAM, and that all important storage can be increased using a microSD card (SD 2.0 compatible). Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Accelerometer (G-Sensor) and GPS are all available and the phone weighs in at 178.5g with physical dimensions of 4.57 inches by 2.33 inches – and it’s only 0.66 inches in depth. A special feature of the phone is the noise-cancelling dual microphones and speakers. The HTC Touch Pro 2 is currently available in the UK from Expansys.

HTC Hero
I have to say I am pretty fond of my HTC Hero (or G2 Touch as it’s known on the T-Mobile network.
To kick off it has a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus to go with its 3.2 inch touch-sensitive 320×480 screen. The unit is slightly angled at the base making it great for phone conversations. Memory is served by 512MB ROM and 288MB RAM, and storage can be extended using a microSD card (SD 2.0 compatible). The HTC Hero also runs the Android operating system. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, internal GPS, Digital Compass, G-Sensor and the Android Application Store are all onboard with this device. The phone weighs in as 135g and is available in the UK from T-Mobile (though the firmware versions on the T-Mobile version are earlier than the latest HTC firmware).

Motorola Milestone
The Milestone, from Motorola, runs the v2 Android operating system. It is a side slider phone with a QWERTY based keyboard layout. The display is one of the largest in this list with a 3.7 inch 480×854 pixel screen offering a 16:9 ratio. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Assisted GPS, and accelerometer are all onbard and applications can be extended using the Android Marketplace. The onboard camera is 5 megapixel with dual LED flash and image stabilisation built in. 8GB of removable memory is included and this can be extended up to 32GB using a microSD card. The Milestone weighs in at 165g and is available in the UK from leading online mobile device vendor, Expansys. The device can be extended using the Milestone Multimedia Station which increases it’s appeal allowing it to act as digital photo frame, movie and music entertainment device, alarm clock, battery charger or any of these combinations.

Samsung Galaxy
The Samsung Galaxy, or GT-I7500 to give it it’s less celestial name, is Samsungs first foray into producing an Android phone. The phone has a 5 megapixel camera, and runs a touch screen 3.2 inch 320×480 AMOLED screen. Storage is served by an 8GB microSD card expandable up to 32GB, and has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS onboard. The Samsung Galaxy, which weighs in at a very light 116g (not to mention slim at only 11.9mm), is currently available in the UK on the O2 network.

Thats a nice list – similar to a list I am making for a post tommorow actually > only I am covering 5.
On the Storm 2 – I really dislike the BB Storm 2 for everything it is worth – I find it a testament to what smart phones should not be, mainly for the awful UI.
I agree on the Galaxy being in this list though, as with the 3GS and Droid / Milestone. The Pre is the best of the bunch in my opinion
