I am regularly on the lookout for new tools and techniques to add to the Twitter Resource section of this site and a recent addition has been TweetPortal – a news aggregation service which uses Twitter as its source and news credible organisations.

TweetPortal

Twitter, the micro-blogging service, generates a lot of information, some useful, some not so, and quite a few eye openers. Making sense of information and identifying breaking news and reliable information sources can be made easier using supporting services, this is where TweetPortal positions itself.

Currently in beta, TweetPortal, includes a number of news categories including World, Business, Sports, Technology, Music and Television and shows key tweets for each of these memes. Suggesting new twitter information sources is encouraged – if you know of a Twitterer organisation who provides credible information you can suggest them for inclusion in the service.

Being able to scan information from Tweets is somewhat akin to scanning news headlines but in a more direct and rawer way – often breaking news can be found this way. As an example of how the service works, the World news section includes latest tweets from Twitter sources including the NY Times, Reuters – TopNews, CBCnews, and ABCnews. The World news category is further broken down into more focused areas including US Politics, World Politics, The Planet, and World News. World Politics includes tweets from the BBC, Downing Street, Reuters, amongst others.

Creating an account on TweetPortal allows you to customise the home screen and include just the section you want to see from the current six main sections and thirty-nine subsections. The platform is being constantly reviewed and developed so expect to see new features appearing soon.

TweetPortal is well worth a visit and may help you make valuable sense of the immense amounts of information Twitter generates daily. To experience TweetPortal for yourself, visit the link: TweetPortal.
