Ever wonder what is involved in the day to day operations of IT? Maybe you have thought "I could do better" a few times – well Intel have released the third wave of their IT Manager games series entitled "IT Manager III: Unseen Forces". There are several factors to the game including managing the helpdesk to keeping an eye on the server room, as the game site tells us:
“Part of your job is ensuring that everybody’s desktop PCs, laptops and servers keep running smoothly. A huge number of things can – and will – go wrong. There are dozens of different software and hardware faults to tackle.”
The aim of the game across each of the challenging levels is to increase the company share price and you do this by ensuring everything is working smoothly and and productively. I particularly like the IT chi indicator – I could do with one of those things on my desk – I could use some enlightenment from time to time.
Key aspects to success will be managing your team well (when you get a team that is!), keeping on top of training requirements, and managing your special objects wisely. In the tool palette there is the spanner tool, the software utility disc tool, and probably the most popular (and biggest industry debated) reboot (switch it off and on again) tool. Also keep an eye on the bozon count of the employees – this will give you insights into where you might expect to find trouble. The game is fun but can be a little slow placed as it eases you in but stick with it and the pace soon starts to pick up. If you keep at it and do well you might even end up in the top ten leader board to show off your IT management skills.
You can play the game on the IT Manager III: Unseen Forces site.
