Installing Moblin For A Test Drive

Moblin beta was recently made available for download (see Moblin v2.0, A New Operating System For Netbooks?). For test driving Moblin I elected to install it under Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. The first thing to do was download the image then rename the extension from .img to .iso. Next, Virtual PC was started up and a new partition created using the “Welcome to the New Virtual Machine Wizard”. I created a new virtual machine, selected Next, gave the virtual machine a name, selected the operating system “Other” then adjusted the RAM from the default of 128 MB to 512 MB, created a new virtual hard disk (16 GB – the default), then chose Finish.

From within Virtual PC, under the CD menu, The .iso image was captured and the virtual image started.

The welcome screen is the first screen to appear giving a number of options including Booting from the image, Booting and Installing, Verifying and Booting, Installing from a Network, and booting from a local drive. For this exercise I selected Boot and Install.

I installed moblin and it seems to work flawlessly. I closed the laptop, opened it back up and or restarted it and during boot it reaches a black screen with white moblin text and stalls. Any had a problem like this and does any have a solution to resolve this issue?

Spur, same problem. I try to install Moblin 2.0 for Netbooks and Moblin 2.1 for NetB and NetT:
    - on netbook Eee 1005HA, using liveUSB stick
    – created with LiLi (in WinXP)
    – created with dd (in Linux Mint 8)
    – created with image-writer script by Intel (in Linux Mint 8), actually
    script don’t work properly…
Result: liveUSB is “dead”, it’s not bootable
    – cretaed in unetbootin (WinXP)
Result: liveUSB is bootable, but after initrd loaded I can see “Unable to find /dev/root…Create symlink and exit this shell to continue…” I think that trouble in initrd.

    - on same netbook in Linux Mint 8 in VirtualBox.
Installed – OK, but after reboot i can see black screen with word “moblin” only.

Same problem, I can see a black screen with the centered Moblin logo only. All installation steps were fine, but when I restarted, only the logo.

    Any fix?

    Regards
