Miro 2.0: Free HD Video Player
Thursday, 12 February 2009
Miro describes itself as “…. a free HD video player. It can play almost any video file and offers over 6,000 free internet TV shows and video podcasts…Best of all, Miro is 100% free and open source, developed by a non-profit organization and volunteers around the world.”
One of the best features of Miro is that it was designed from the ground up for high definition video and has thousands of shows on offer. Miro can also play many video formats including AVI, MPEG, QuickTime, WMV, and XVID:
- Windows embeds VLC to play videos
- MAC uses QuickTime 7 to play videos
- Linux uses GStreamer or Xine to play videos
You can get more information from the Miro FAQ section. One particular FAQ question talks about the default expiry of unsaved videos as being 6 days, however this can be adjusted by “your preferences on the Settings section of each feed (look in the upper-right), or globally in the preferences dialog”.
Shows can be downloaded for viewing later so you can take your viewing wherever you go. Miro contains BitTorrent support and uses video RSS feeds to automatically detect new programs in a series and make them available for watching. You can also share videos with your friends. Getting your videos into Miro is also made easier with some useful publishing tips and guides.
Versions of Miro are available for Windows, MAC and Linux. Miro can be found at www.getmiro.com
