IT Pro are reporting Microsoft is replacing its paid for OneCare Live service with a free security suite (hurray!) currently codenamed “Morro” – a play on tomorrow perhaps? Onecare retail subscription services are likely to crease on June 30, 2009 and the new product will be available in the second half of 2009 (I hope they don’t leave too much of a gap between the two!)
Microsoft describe the new platform as “…a stand-alone download and offer malware protection for the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. When used in conjunction with the ongoing security and privacy enhancements of Windows and Internet Explorer, this new solution will offer consumers a robust, no-cost security solution to help protect against the majority of online threats.”
But what do we do in the mean time? I wouldn’t recommend holding off on a solution if you have nothing in place so be safe.
You can read the IT Pro article at Microsoft scraps OneCare and the Microsoft Press Release at Microsoft Announces Plans for No-Cost Consumer Security Offering.
You can also visit the Windows Live OneCare Team Blog – whilst they empty their desks presumably.
