Email Archiving Solutions Introduction

There are a number of reasons why email should be archived, including legal, business and practical reasons. In particular, forensic electronic mail archive compliance is playing an increasing part in the archiving requirements for electronic email.

An important part of archiving is the search and restore of valuable information – both the capacity of the service to deal with the information over prolonged periods of time but also the speed of the service for returning searches based on the results. Another important factor is the time taken, and effort required, to transfer mail archives from one device or service provider to another – this is often referred to as data ingestion and is something you should give serious consideration when looking to change from your existing provider or sign up with a new provider.

Email Archiving Solution Summary

A number of approaches to email archiving are available from the solution providers listed above. These split into three primary categories: Software based (installed on your own servers), Appliance based (provided on a provided hardware appliance), and Service based (usually a subscription based managed service).
