When starting Outlook 2007 and attempting to send new e-mail (compose a message) we were getting the message “A dialog box is open. Close it and try again.”. This alert appeared even though no dialog boxes appeared to be open.
The solution was to restart the computer then open another Office application and fill in the User Name details dialog box.
Once this was completed Outlook worked correctly.

Thank you for this post. I have been searching through Microsoft’s site looking for a solution to this error, because there was no dialogue box open when the error message is displayed. I did what you suggested and it works now.
Tools, Options, Mail Format, Editor Options.
Place three initials in the ‘Initials’ field.
, ,
Kill Outlook from Task Manager.
Restart Outlook.
Never look back.
This web form has much to be desired.
1) if you mistype the CAPTCHA, it does not remember what you typed.
2) that silly comma business you see in my previous post was typed using pretty standard fair for representing gui buttons: “OK, Apply, OK”
Lets try another convention: \, \, \. If that doesn’t show up, I am not coming back.
Thanks for the tip phil and I will look at the web form to see if things can be improved.
[...] I found this article online that suggested just opening another office product, inputting initials there, and re-opening outlook: http://www.jasonslater.co.uk/2008/05/28/outlook-2007-reports-dialog-box-is-open-alert/ [...]
