Live Mesh - are we finally breaking free from the desk?

Roll Up, Roll Up, the Live Mesh Tech Preview is here and in the words of the Live Mesh team:

"Live Mesh puts you at the center of your digital world, seamlessly connecting you to the people, devices, programs, and information you care about — available wherever you happen to be."

Live Mesh is taking Microsoft a step closer to freeing us from the shackles of the desk and not a moment too soon. Clearly a step up from Folder Share which I have used occasionally (to be honest Folder Share never really did it for me) Live Mesh incorporates a number of useful functions including compatibility across PCs, Macs and Mobile Phones based around the idea of a Live Desktop to share folders and devices in a peer to peer network arrangement.

livemeshWhilst it incorporates ideas from Folder Share, SkyDrive and Messenger, for me at least, it is the idea of the virtual desktop that could be the real killer application. If services can be delivered and issues to do with scaling resolved then Live Mesh may just offer us a glimpse of the future.

Sadly, I was just too late to sign up for the tech preview (blame it on the man flu) but I have requested to be added to the waiting list and in the meantime joined the Microsoft Connect program.

Our design goals for Live Mesh are to have…

  • …your devices work together
  • …your data and applications available from anywhere
  • …the people you need to connect with just a few clicks away for sharing and collaborating
  • … the information you need to stay up-to-date and always be available
