A world without XP …

As I was preparing my regular post for GizmosforGeeks this week I read their article Windows XP nears the end. Microsoft Windows XP has served us well for a very long time and it really is sad to see it being phased out. We took to XP instantly (after the problematic Windows Me) and before that we loved WfWG 3.1 which I still recall fondly. But time moves on and is rapidly running out for XP.

In a nutshell the schedule according to GizmosforGeeks is:

  • June 30, 2008: PC makers stop selling boxes with Windows XP installed.
  • Jan 31, 2009: Microsoft stops selling XP.
  • Apr 14, 2009: Live and warranty support ends.
  • Apr 8, 2014: All support (including security patches) ends.
  • There are a number of petitions to save Windows XP and I imagine it may get extended for a short while but its rapidly becoming that time when you have to draw a line under something and move on. So, I guess its about time I reached into my top drawer for Vista Ultimate which has been sitting in waiting for some time and give it another go.

The Microsoft Windows XP site is currently at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/default.mspx
