Windows Live FolderShare beta
FolderShare has entered the Windows Live fold renamed unsurprisingly enough as Windows Live FolderShare beta. The Windows Live help team describe FolderShare as “…a free service that you can use to keep your files synchronized (The process of uploading and downloading information between two or more computers so that the information on each computer is identical.) between your computers, share files with friends or colleagues, and download your files from any computer that’s connected to the Internet.“
Once signed up for the free service a small program is downloaded to your computer (Windows or Mac) and sits in your task bar until clicked. The first thing to do is decide which folder or folders you want to include in FolderShare - this is achieved using the FolderShare web site and once done other computers you register into your FolderShare group can access the synchronised files. Files can be up to 2GB in size.
Windows Live FolderShare is a handy program for synchronising files if you are on the move or want to share data with others - however if you have a large number of files then you may need to ensure you have a sufficiently fast Internet connection to keep up with all the traffic. Plus I haven’t found a way for it to sync my thumbdrive yet which might help as a handy backup and for those times when I forget to take it with me.
A slightly different solution that doesn’t use synchronisation however would be the recently announced Microsoft Office Live Workspace BETA.
There are some screenshots over on Life Rocks! 2.0 and you can learn more and sign-up for the service at the Windows Live FolderShare site at: https://www.foldershare.com/
