I finally took the plunge last night to take a look at Second Life. It’s often talked about on the web, in magazines, and there was even a documentary featuring it on television last week – so I thought I should at least see what it’s all about for myself. Signing up for it was quite straightforward and the interface was quite speedy even on my now aging single processor PC at home. I created my screen name and avatar and off I went into the orientation world of Second Life – even my partner Sharon found it quite interesting wandering around gesturing and talking to people. That is however until we teleported out of orientation into the mainland.
The first place we happened upon was a curious place – even for my broad mind; lots of avatars were saying and particularly doing some very strange things – certainly things that weren’t mentioned on orientation island – which is fine I guess as Second Life is a huge world so there is plenty of room for everyone and everything.
However as this was the first place I innocently teleported to on the mainland it was a surprise – it certainly put Sharon off the idea and she disappeared off somewhere. I soon enough teleported out to a different place trying to find a place where a large number of people congregated so that I could chat about Second Life. Imagine my surprise when I landed facing what described itself as a “Gentleman’s Club”. Walking around for a few minutes confirmed the idea that this was not the place for me at which point I exited Second Life. Live and let live I say but two in a row was certainly a surprise especially as there was no prior warning as to what I may happen upon. My avatar is probably still standing there in ‘sleep state’ waiting for me to log back on.
I do plan to revisit Second Life with the hope of finding something more interesting and appropriate – my avatar is Janssen Dudek – so if you see me and are familiar with Second Life then please say hello and point me in the right direction!
