According to an article by Antony Savvas in ComputerWeekly suitably entitled "Microsoft releases code for .net to ease development" it would seem that Microsoft is indeed to release the code for its .NET platform. Wow.
I couldn’t believe it at first so I checked out Scott Guthrie’s Blog and yes, it appears to be true. Wowee.
This has to be taken as a very bold and impressive step by Microsoft after all it does have it’s rather unfair share of naysayers and no doubt people will be flocking to tear the stuff apart. But that’s the double whammy you see. By allowing people to see the code behind the scenes the product can actually improve and take advantage of the ‘many eyes’ syndrome and benefit from fresh pairs of eyes looking for bugs and weaknesses.
Anyone who reads this Blog will know I am a fan of Microsoft products anyway but that said even the worst of Microsoft naysayers has to be somewhat impressed by this move. Sure, there are still likely to be people shouting the odds at why MS haven’t allowed people to actually modify the code, and no doubt others will draw paranoid conclusions from it all but I personally think they are to be applauded for taking this brave step.
