Refreshing the Blog - What’s next?
Since migrating my Blog from it’s previous hosted home to a self-hosted environment using WordPress it’s time to start sorting things out. First and foremost I have a large number of categories that seemed like a good idea at the time but now are far from being useful and are probably somewhat detrimental to the functionality of my Blog. According to the stats on the dashboard I currently have a whopping 296 categories but only 9 tags. What happened you see, from very early on, was that every time I made a post with a new or interesting word in it I made it a Category. Whoops. My plan now is to completely remove all the 1 and 2 occurrence categories and aim to reduce the overall number of categories to around 10 – big task? You betcha.
The next step is going to be to sort out what I feel are a dozen or so of my best posts to give new readers a feel for what they can find on my Blog, whilst also acting as a reminder for me of the sort of posts I should be making instead of the odd one or two line posts that are probably more suited to my tumble log.
Third, is going to be work on the style of the Blog – it’s all a bit blue for my liking. I liked it early on but now I think it needs a bit of colour and a little better laying out.
Fourth, I need to decide which set of stats I’m going to use. Currently, I use a number of different ones including Google, StatCounter, Feedburner but I really need to just choose one and stick with that.
That sounds like enough work to do for now.

Thanks Jamie, I’m assuming that sits on the Linux machine? Jas.

I’ve been using Google Analytics, but we have recently installed AWstats, an open source solution that reads your Apache file. Its simple, but yet looks very effective. Comparing Google to AWstats I get the feeling that Google is missing stuff.
