Exchange Server 2007

Submitted by jasonslater on Friday, 27 July 20072 Comments

I seem to have some to a bit of a halt with the roll out of Exchange Server 2007. Yes, I’ve attended the roadshows and read the forums, blogs and newsgroups and yes I was built up into a frenzy to upgrade from Exchange Server 2000 but now it’s installed and I have some ‘guinea pig’ users running it I’m left wondering … what now?

It’s probably me more than the software but, other than OWA, the users don’t really seem to have noticed any real difference - which - considering the financial committment we placed with the product is a bit of a surprise.

I think I was hoping for some kind of new or whizzy functionality like built-in SPAM filter, etc. Unified Messaging also seems further away than ever as I understand their is some incompatibility between Exchange Server 2007 and our VOIP solution. Only one user has a PDA so the ActiveSync function isn’t really in use either. From the clients point of view upgraded them from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2003 but the differences they notice aren’t really attributable to Exchange Server 2007 but more to outlook itself.

Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not complaining about the product but I am wondering where all the cool new functionality is … perhaps I need to read a few more newsgroups.

We are about to be going through the same thing. Still on Exchange 2000 and starting the process of updating to Exchange 2007. But its been a hard sell to management because there are not any “whiz bang, this is going to revolutionize how we use email” features.

What finally sold them was the whole DST headache. I made the statement “if they are no longer going to support things like this then what about any new vulnerabilities that are found and will remain unpatched because we are not supported”

We will probably just outright buy the software and stretch it out 5 - 6 years like we did with Exchange 2000. Open-licensing and software assurance just don’t seem worth it.

Thanks for the comment beandip, it was primarily the support issue that swung the investment for us too, and like you we’ll probably still be running Exchange 2007 in 5-6 years !

    Jason.
