The most popular Science Fiction TV Show

July 17th, 2007 · No Comments

I know this is a bit off topic for me but as an avid Sci-Fi Geek as well as IT Geek I couldn’t help commenting on a recent article I read. According to an article in the Guardian , the most popular Science Fiction TV Show (based on a Radio Times readers poll) is Red Dwarf.

The results of the poll according to the article are as follows:

  • 1 Red Dwarf
  • 2 The X Files
  • 3 Lost
  • 4 Life On Mars
  • 5 Buffy The Vampire Slayer
  • 6 Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • 7 Stargate SG-1
  • 8 Star Trek
  • 9 The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy
  • 10 Quantum Leap
  • 11 Heroes
  • 12 Blake’s 7
  • 13 Twin Peaks
  • 14 V
  • 15 Torchwood
  • 16 Babylon 5
  • 17 The Prisoner
  • 18 Battlestar Galactica
  • 19 Thunderbirds
  • 20 Lost In Space

Now, I have just a few issues with this:

  • First, Doctor Who was disallowed - what? It’s like saying Spielberg movies are disallowed from the top movies of all time. Thats just not fair is it? I mean Torchwood is allowed and that’s a direct spin off and has only had one season!
  • Secondly, Lost, Life on Mars, The Prisoner and Twin Peaks - yes great shows but Science Fiction? Does this mean that any borderline-fringe-come-cult tv show qualifies as science fiction?
  • Thirdly, where is Space 1999, The Invisible Man (David McCallum), The Hulk, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Thunderbirds, the Tomorrow People, The Omega Factor, Ultraviolet, Voyager, The Time Tunnel, Lexx and Stargate Atlantis? Or are our memories too short?
  • Fourthly, BattleStar Galactica - is that the original version or the new version? I see both versions of Star Trek are listed separately.
