Password Management Systems
I’ll be one of the first to be telling people not to write their passwords down; whilst at the same time telling them to make their passwords as complex as possible. The problem is when the number of passwords in use gets too many to remember. Especially, and I’ve spouted on about this before, when password systems allow only a few attempts to get the password right.
I think the time has come to at least look at password management systems. I’ve seen users in the past use things like Roboform which are more generic solutions but I’m particularly interested in Password Management. Of course, if and when the likes of Passport ever get the mass momentum they need then they might solve the problem completely - but until then what’s available? Well I guess the requirements are:
- High Level of Encryption
- Built-In Password Generator - not sure about this personally but it may be useful
- Backup facility
- Runnable from something like a USB stick for added security
- Does not need installing
- Automatic form detection
I’ve got hold of some whitepapers (bed time reading) and identified some solutions I am going to look at including:
Aurora Password Manager
Access Manager
Enterprise Password Vault

We use KeePass, open source product. Ticks all the boxes you mention, apart from instant run, you need to install it.
Thanks for the tip terinea. I’ve downloaded KeePass and I see you can expand it onto a USB stick rather than installing it, as well as having more features than Access Manager.
I am going to give it a run. Jas.
